Features of Outpatient Rehab

As we’ll discuss a bit later in today’s post, the cost of outpatient rehab isn’t the same for everyone. One reason for this is that outpatient rehab can refer to several distinct programs. Another reason is that within these programs, patients will have a range of different needs that may require a variety of different services.

Levels of care

Levels of outpatient rehab include:

  • Partial hospitalization programs (PHPs) – At this level, patients are usually at the rehab center for 6-8 hours per day, five or six days per week. Treatment at the PHP level is similar to what occurs in a residential program, often featuring several types of therapies and support services.
  • Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) – IOPs usually offer about three hours of treatment per day, with group therapy usually being the main activity. Some IOPs require patients to participate in treatment five days per week, while others offer the option to attend fewer sessions on a weekly basis.
  • Virtual treatment – This option allows people to participate in outpatient rehab from the comfort of their own home, via secure online videoconferencing. Virtual outpatient treatment is usually provided at the IOP level.

Disorders treated

Individuals who become addicted to alcohol and other drugs are frequently also affected by past trauma or other mental health concerns. Thus, in addition to treating substance use disorders (addictions), outpatient rehabs frequently also help people with challenges such as:

  • Anxiety disorders
  • Depressive disorders
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Schizophrenia
  • Schizoaffective disorder
  • Borderline personality disorder (BPD)
  • Suicidal ideation
  • Self-harm
  • Impulsivity
  • Anger management problems

Therapies and services

Treatment in an outpatient rehab program can include a variety of therapies and support services, such as:

  • Medication management
  • Individual psychotherapy
  • Group therapy
  • Family counseling and support
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
  • Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy
  • Holistic therapies
  • Experiential therapies
  • Relapse prevention education
  • Discharge planning

How Much Does Outpatient Rehab Cost?

As we alluded to at the outset of today’s post, the question of how much does outpatient rehab cost doesn’t have a simple or standardized answer. Factors that can influence the final cost of a person’s care can include:

  • Which type of program they are in (PHP or IOP)
  • Which therapies and other services they receive (some providers offer certain services as add-ons at extra cost)
  • How long they remain in the program
  • How much of their care will be covered by their insurance provider

This information isn’t presented here in an attempt to dodge the question of how much does outpatient rehab cost. Instead, it’s meant to highlight that one person’s experience in a PHP or an IOP can differ considerably from another’s, even if they are in the same program at the same time.

To be most effective, treatment for addictions and mental illnesses should be personalized to the greatest degree possible. This commitment to personalization will be reflected in the cost of care, as patients and their insurers will only be billed for the specific services they receive.

This does not mean that a person has to wait until they’re at the end of their time in outpatient rehab to discover how much they owe. At reputable treatment centers such as Design Recovery, patients (and, when appropriate, their family members) know the cost of care before they receive any services.

Is Outpatient Rehab Right for Me?

Understanding the cost of treatment is just one part of deciding if outpatient rehab is right for you. While every treatment center has its own admissions policies, PHPs and IOPs are generally designed for people who:

  • Need a greater amount of care than they can receive via weekly or monthly sessions with a therapist
  • Have access to transportation to and from the treatment center
  • Are not currently going through withdrawal or in the midst of a mental health crisis
  • Do not currently pose a threat to themselves or others
  • Do not require round-the-clock supervision or 24/7 access to care (though some centers offer supportive housing for individuals who need after-hours support)
  • Are willing to make an honest effort to fully engage in all aspects of treatment

Many people turn to outpatient rehab programs for additional support after they have completed an inpatient or residential program. A continued connection to structured clinical care, combined with additional opportunities for independent living during non-treatment hours, can made outpatient rehab an ideal option for people who are in the early stages of learning how to live a healthy and productive life in recovery.

However, prior treatment experience is typically not a requirement for admission into most outpatient rehabs. Many individuals step up to a PHP or IOP after spending time in traditional outpatient therapy, while many others enter treatment for the first time at one of these outpatient levels.
