What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program?

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is the highest level of outpatient care for individuals whose lives have been disrupted by addictions and certain co-occurring mental health concerns.

Many aspects of treatment at the PHP level are similar to what occurs in inpatient programs, with the exception that patients are only required to be at our center when they are receiving care. During non-treatment hours, they may return to their home or to an alternative supported residence such as a sober living house.

Also referred to as a day treatment program, our Jacksonville PHP features full days of care, five days per week.

Who Is a PHP Designed For?

At Design Recovery, we make all admissions decisions on an individual basis, following a thorough review of each prospective patient’s history, needs, and goals. In general, though, our PHP addiction treatment program in Florida is designed for patients who:

  • Have a history of compulsive substance use involving alcohol or another addictive drug
  • Can benefit from full days of treatment, involving multiple therapies and support services
  • Are willing to engage in all aspects of treatment to the best of their ability
  • Do not require round-the-clock care and supervision

Some patients enroll in our PHP after completing an inpatient program. For these individuals, our PHP is a source of essential step-down support, so that they can continue to work on their recovery skills and prepare for a successful transition out of treatment.

Other patients enter treatment directly at the PHP level, or transfer into the program after realizing they need a greater degree of care than they were previously receiving.

PHP Treatment Schedule

Our PHP is in session Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m.– 4:30 p.m. each day. A typical daily schedule involves:

  • 9 a.m.–noon: Therapy sessions
  • Noon–12:30 p.m.: Lunch break
  • 12:30–2:30 p.m.: Surf therapy or another type of recreational therapy
  • 2:30–4:30 p.m.: Afternoon group sessions

How Long Does PHP in Jacksonville Last?

Most people who receive care at the PHP level remain in treatment for about 60–90 days. But please note that is just a general estimate.

As we do with all other aspects of our programming, our team works closely with each patient to determine optimal length of stay based on their progress, goals, and continued needs.

Inpatient vs. Outpatient Care

Inpatient programs and PHPs share many characteristics, and many patients spend time at both levels. But there are a few key differences between inpatient vs. outpatient care that prospective patients and their loved ones should consider before beginning treatment:

  • Living arrangements: When a person is in an inpatient program, they live at the facility where they are receiving care. In a PHP, patients return to their homes, or to alternative supported residences, in the evenings and on days when no sessions are scheduled.
  • Time in treatment: Since patients are at the facility 24/7, inpatient programs have the opportunity to provide a greater amount of daily treatment than PHPs can.
  • Focus: Inpatient programs are often designed to help patients achieve the level of stability and improved functioning that will allow them to transition to a lower level of care. PHPs focus on helping patients prepare for a successful return to their family and community.
  • Outside opportunities: PHPs allow patients to practice their newly developed skills in a real-world environment when treatment is not in session. Inpatient programs provide temporary respite from external stresses and pressures, so that patients can focus their full attention on their health.

Transition Planning After PHP

The day a patient enters our partial hospitalization program in Jacksonville, Florida, we begin to plan for their eventual discharge. By the time they are ready to exit the program, we will have prepared a detailed plan to guide their continued recovery in the weeks and months to come.

For some patients, the post-PHP phase of their recovery will involve stepping down to an intensive outpatient program. For others, the ideal next step may be to take part in traditional outpatient therapy, participate in a peer-led support group, or engage in other community-based services.

By starting the discharge planning process on day one, we are able to document a patient’s progress, identify areas that merit additional attention, and ensure that they have the customized support that best aligns with their unique needs and goals.
