What is a Dual Diagnosis Disorder?
Dual diagnosis is a clinical term that refers to the simultaneous presence of a substance use disorder (addiction) and a mental health disorder (mental illness).
The 2023 edition of the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NS-DUH) included the following information about the prevalence of dual diagnosis among adults in the U.S.:
- 58.7 million adults had some form of mental illness and 46.3 million were addicted to alcohol or another drug.
- 20.4 million adults (7.9% of all people ages 18 and above) had both a mental health disorder and a substance use disorder in the previous 12 months.
- This means that about 35% of people with a mental illness also struggled with addiction, and about 44% of those with an addiction also had a mental health concern.
- The rate of dual diagnosis was slightly higher among women (8.2%) than among men (7.7%).
Are Dual Diagnosis Disorders and Co-Occurring Disorders the Same?
In addition to dual diagnosis, clinicians often use the term “co-occurring disorders” when discussing someone who has two conditions at the same time. These terms are quite similar, and they are often used interchangeably, but they are not identical:
- Co-occurring disorders refers to multiple mental health concerns. For example, someone who is in treatment for both anxiety and depression at Design Recovery could be accurately described as getting care for co-occurring disorders in Florida.
- Dual diagnosis is a specific type of co-occurring disorders that involves some form of addiction in addition to a mental health concern. A Design Recovery patient with both PTSD and alcoholism could be accurately described as receiving dual diagnosis treatment in Jacksonville.

Our Treatment Approach
Treatment at Design Recovery reflects many of the principles of trauma-informed care. This approach is based on the understanding that many people who receive mental health and addiction treatment been abused, neglected, victimized, or otherwise traumatized at some point in their past.
Trauma-informed care–which benefits all patients, including those who don’t have histories of untreated trauma–emphasizes open communication, transparent decision-making, and personal empowerment. It also helps us maintain a safe and supportive environment where patients are not at risk of being re-traumatized by their experiences in treatment.

Medication Management During Treatment
Medication management can be a vital service for Design Recovery patients who are receiving dual diagnosis treatment in Jacksonville.
Symptoms of anxiety, depression, and several other mental health concerns often respond well to treatment involving prescription medications. However, we understand that people who have been struggling with addiction may be concerned about taking medication.
We work closely with all patients to determine if certain medications can help them achieve their treatment goals, and to help them manage their med use without undermining their recovery.
