What is Psychiatry?

Psychiatrists attend medical school and obtain their licenses as physicians, as well as their licenses to practice psychiatry. This allows them to treat people who have mental health disorders, substance use disorders, and otherwise need help improving their mental health.

Psychiatrists perform diagnoses, recommend treatment plans, and help prevent mental health disorders from developing or worsening. They also prescribe medications to help people improve their mental health, including both curable and chronic disorders.

How Does Psychiatry for Substance Use Disorder Work?

When someone abuses drugs or alcohol, they often think that’s the beginning and end of their problem.

However, substance use disorders have a lot to do with getting high or drunk to deal with traumatic experiences or underlying mental health disorders.

For example, a person who went through a traumatic event or series of events, such as military service or physical or sexual assault, may begin abusing substances to help avoid their feelings or decrease their impact.

The individual may also have a mental illness, like anxiety or depression, and try to ease their symptoms with drugs and alcohol. Psychiatry sessions help identify reasons why they feel the need to check out emotionally, resolve them, and move into the future without needing substances.

Our Rehab Programs That Offer Psychiatry

Design Recovery offers two levels of care that include psychiatry sessions to help people gain control over their substance use disorders.

Neither requires the individual to move into a facility for their treatment. Instead, they join us at our facility for their sessions and return home when they are over. The levels of care we offer include:

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): This works well for people who are new to recovery and need comprehensive care to help them keep from relapsing. Therapy sessions take place on Monday through Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): A step down from our Partial Hospitalization Program, this level of care offers therapy sessions on three to five days a week that run from 9:00 A.M. to noon.

What To Expect During a Psychiatry Session

The first appointment with a psychiatrist will include conversations about the person’s experiences and what help they want.

The psychiatrist will ask questions to help them understand the details of the person’s experience with addiction and any co-occurring mental health disorders. The clinician may use the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) to help make an official diagnosis. The options for medications will be discussed, and a treatment plan will be recommended. Some psychiatrists also provide talk therapy sessions.

Do I Have to Take Medication?

Many people who see a psychiatrist take prescription medications under their supervision.

Medications can help minimize or stop some of their symptoms of mental illness, as well as help treat symptoms like anxiety and depression that contribute to a person abusing substances to deal with them.

However, a person does not have to take prescription drugs to participate in psychiatry in Jacksonville.

The psychiatrist will discuss the options for medications with their client, who makes the final decision on whether they want to use them.

Psychiatry in Conjunction with Other Treatment Modalities

A person can attend psychiatry alone or combine it with appointments for a variety of therapy modalities. Design Recovery offers the following types of therapy:

An initial meeting with the person in treatment will determine which types of therapy will offer them the best portals to healing their addiction and moving on with life.
