What is Group Therapy?
Group therapy for substance abuse provides people with an alternative to just attending traditional individual talk therapy. While one-on-one therapy provides vital assistance to help people overcome their addictions, it often works well in conjunction with group therapy.
A licensed therapist leads group therapy by gathering together a group of people with a common issue, such as substance use disorders. The group is typically around six to twelve people, and they meet once or twice per week on average.
How Does Group Therapy Work in Addiction Treatment?
During group therapy, the therapist will bring up topics for the people in attendance to discuss.
Each person can answer a question or comment on the conversation, which allows them to enjoy peer support that helps them offer advice and benefit from taking it.
Topics can include the challenges of staying off drugs and alcohol, tough situations that arise, and celebrating steps forward. The faces in the group change as some members graduate from group therapy, and others arrive new to it. The safety of the circle of support is maintained at all times.
Types of Group Therapy
Design Recovery offers four different kinds of group therapy for substance abuse so that each person has a variety of types available to them. The therapy modalities include:
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT): DBT helps people by addressing four main tenets that include interpersonal effectiveness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and mindfulness.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT teaches people how their thoughts and emotions influence their behaviors in both positive and negative ways.
Holistic Therapy: This type of therapy approaches healing three parts of the person simultaneously, including mental, physical, and spiritual.
Surf Therapy: This helps individuals develop a strong mind-body connection and learn to set effective goals.
Jacksonville Addiction Treatment Programs That Offer Group Therapy
We offer two levels of outpatient programs that both include group therapy.
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): Therapy sessions last from 9:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. on Monday through Friday. They are a good fit for people who need comprehensive care for several days each week.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): Therapy sessions take place from 9:00 A.M. to noon on three to five days per week. This level of care works well for those who have completed a Partial Hospitalization Program or don’t need one.
