What is Individual Psychotherapy?

Individual psychotherapy is a type of “talk therapy” that consists of confidential, one-on-one conversations between a patient and a therapist. It can be provided on a standalone basis or as part of a comprehensive addiction counseling plan.

The structure and focus of individual therapy sessions can vary depending on the needs of the patient and which modality the therapist specializes in.

Individual therapy in Jacksonville at Design Recovery may incorporate the principles of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy.

Benefits of Individual Therapy in Addiction Treatment

Depending on your unique history, the types of challenges you are currently facing, and your treatment goals, examples of the benefits you may receive from individual therapy at Design Recovery include:

  • Exploring the issues that may have contributed to your substance use, or that may have previously stopped you from seeking treatment
  • Discussing strategies for responding to triggers in a healthy manner, without resorting to substance use
  • Identifying specific steps you can take to repair relationships that were harmed by your compulsive substance use
  • Addressing personal challenges that you don’t feel comfortable talking about in a group environment
  • Evaluating your progress in treatment and assessing the effectiveness of your recovery efforts thus far
  • Learning how to set and maintain healthy boundaries with friends, family members, and colleagues
  • Becoming a more effective self-advocate, which includes knowing how to ask for help when you need it
  • Getting help for anxiety, depression, or other co-occurring mental health concerns

Types of Psychotherapy We Provide

At Design Recovery in Jacksonville, addiction counseling incorporates several types of therapy, including:

  • Group therapy: Working with a trained professional and a small number of other patients to learn more about recovery and develop essential relapse-prevention skills
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT): A goal-oriented form of therapy to help you address maladaptive thought patterns, self-defeating behaviors, and problematic beliefs
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT): Focused guidance to improve your skills in the areas of mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness
  • Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy: A dynamic approach to ease the emotional pain you experience when recalling certain traumatic memories
  • Surf therapy: Developing greater resilience and building confidence while riding the waves with other patients and an experienced instructor
  • Holistic therapy: Taking part in art, yoga, meditation, and vibroacoustic therapy sessions to help you experience true healing in mind, body, and spirit

Please note that your customized plan may not include every service listed above. Treatment can vary depending on your specific needs and goals, as well as which program (IOP or PHP) you are enrolled in.

Programs That Offer Individual Therapy

Individual therapy is provided at two levels of care at Design Recovery:

  • Our partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers full days of care, five days a week. You’ll take part in a customized array of services, Monday—Friday, 9 a.m.—4:30 p.m. each day.
  • Our intensive outpatient program (IOP) gives you the option of attending treatment either three or five days per week, with three hours of programming offered each day.

What To Expect During An Individual Therapy Session

As alluded to previously on this page, individual therapy sessions are confidential one-on-one conversations with a trained professional.

You will be seated in a comfortable chair, as you would if you were going to spend some time catching up with a friend or family member. Your therapist may start the session by asking you a few general questions, and the conversation should flow naturally based on your responses.

The purpose of individual therapy isn’t to critique you or “fix” you. The goal is to establish a collaborative environment where you can work with a compassionate expert to develop solutions for challenges that have been preventing you from living the healthier, more satisfying life that you deserve.

Treatment Planning and Goal Setting

Patient empowerment is a key component of our addiction counseling in Jacksonville. We want you to take an active role in all aspects of your care, which includes planning your treatment and identifying your short- and long-term goals.

Individual sessions can be ideal opportunities to review your progress and work with your therapist to determine if any adjustments need to be made in your plan, so that you’re best prepared to achieve your objectives and continue to progress in your recovery.
