What Types of Rehab Programs Do Cigna Plans Cover?

Addiction treatment can occur at several levels of care. Some people need to spend time at multiple levels, while others may enter and exit treatment at the same level.

Your Cigna rehab coverage should include the following options:

• Detoxification: This is a short-term program that is commonly referred to simply as detox. If your attempts to end your substance use have been derailed by the distress of withdrawal, detox may be the right place for you to begin your recovery journey. Depending on the nature and severity of your withdrawal symptoms, you can both medical and therapeutic support in detox. This should minimized your discomfort and ensure that the experience doesn’t harm your health. Usual length of stay in detox is 5—10 days.
• Residential treatment: If you get addiction treatment in a residential program, you will live at the center while you’re receiving care. This provides you with temporary relief from the stresses and temptations of daily life, which could trigger a relapse if you haven’t established a solid foothold in early recovery. Typical features of residential programming include customized daily schedules, multiple types of therapy, supervised recreational activities, meals and snacks, and either private or semi-private patient rooms. Typical length of stay in a residential addiction treatment program is 28 days.
• Partial hospitalization program (PHP): Partial hospitalization is one of two outpatient treatment options that we provide at Design Recovery. When you receive care in our PHP, you will attend treatment Monday—Friday, 9 a.m.—4:30 p.m. each day. Unlike what happens in a residential program, when you’re in our PHP you will return home at the end of the day and on the weekends. During an average day in our PHP, you can expect to take part in multiple forms of therapy, enjoy a lunch break, and participate in surf therapy, a gym session, or another holistic activity. Patients usually remain in our PHP for 60—90 days.
• Intensive outpatient program (IOP): Our intensive outpatient program is an ideal level of care for patients who don’t need full days of care or 24/7 support, but who can still benefit from a structured connection to quality clinical care. When you’re in our IOP, you will have the option of attending treatment either three or five days a week. Each treatment day is 9 a.m.—noon, so you’ll receive either nine or 15 hours of care per week. If you need to work, attend school, or fulfill other obligations while you’re getting treatment, our IOP’s flexible schedule can accommodate those other demands on your time.

Please note that our center in Jacksonville offers treatment at the PHP and IOP levels only. However, if your assessment reveals that you may be better served by starting your treatment in detox or a residential program, we can refer you to a trusted provider in the area. 

How Long Does Cigna Cover Rehab in Jacksonville?

Since the passage of the Affordable Care Act in March 2010, mental and behavioral health conditions such as addiction are considered essential health benefits. This means that insurers must provide coverage for these conditions at a similar level as medical and surgical services.

However, this doesn’t mean that your Cigna rehab coverage guarantees you an unlimited number of days in treatment. All plans have certain limitations, though the parameters can vary among different policies.
