What Types of Rehab Programs Do Blue Cross Blue Shield Plans Cover?

Depending on the specifics of your policy, your Blue Cross Blue Shield rehab coverage may include programs such as:

• Detoxification: This short-term program, which is commonly referred to as detox, provides medical and therapeutic support to help people get through withdrawal. Depending on what substance a person has become dependent on, withdrawal can be a highly unpleasant experience that could put their health at risk. Detox can help them get past this obstacle, so they have the strength and clarity to fully engage in therapy and begin to build a healthier life in recovery.
• Residential treatment: Residential programs allow patients to temporarily step away from the stresses and pressures of everyday life, so they can focus their full attention on their health. A typical day in a residential program can include several types of therapy, along with three nutritious meals and opportunities for supervised recreation. Patients often remain in residential treatment for about 28 days, then step down to one of the following levels for additional support. 
• Partial hospitalization program (PHP): Partial hospitalization at Design Recovery involves full days of care, five days per week, without requiring patients to remain at the center when they are not receiving care. Our PHP participants attend treatment Monday—Friday, 9 a.m.—4:30 p.m. each day. An average day in our PHP includes multiple forms of therapy, a lunch break, and either surf therapy or a gym session. Typical length of stay at this level is 60—90 days, but that can vary depending on each patient’s progress and continued needs.
• Intensive outpatient program (IOP): At the intensive outpatient level, participants have considerable scheduling flexibility while still benefitting from structured clinical care. Our IOP is in session Monday—Friday, 9 a.m.—noon each day, with the option to attend treatment either three or five days per week. This can be ideal for people who need to work, attend school, or take care of other personal obligations while they’re working to gain a solid foothold in recovery.
