Understanding Addiction As a Disease

Addiction is not a personality flaw, nor is it evidence of low character or poor self-discipline. It is a chronic, progressive disease that affects tens of millions of people in the U.S. and throughout the rest of the world. It is also a treatable condition.

As a chronic illness, addiction is unlikely to simply disappear on its own. As a progressive disorder, it is likely to become more severe the longer a person goes without getting the right type of help.

Common symptoms of addiction include:

  • Having powerful cravings for alcohol or another drug
  • Frequently using substances in larger amounts or for a longer period of time than intended
  • Feeling compelled to continue using substances even after experiencing physical, psychological, or social damage that was caused or worsened by prior use
  • Failing to meet responsibilities due to substance use
  • Developing tolerance, which needing to use larger or more potent amounts of a substance to feel its effects
  • Having withdrawal symptoms when attempting to curtail substance use
  • Wanting to stop using substances, but finding it impossible to do so

Our Addiction Treatment Programs in Jacksonville

Design Recovery provides two levels of outpatient addiction treatment in Jacksonville:

  • Our partial hospitalization program (PHP) is in session Monday—Friday, 9 a.m.—4:30 p.m. each day. Typical treatment days include multiple forms of psychotherapy (talk therapy), a lunch break, and either surf therapy or another form of therapeutic recreation.
  • Our intensive outpatient program (IOP) is in session 9 a.m.—noon, with patients having the option to participate in treatment three or five days per week. This schedule balances quality clinical care with increased opportunities for independent living.

Both of these programs serve adults who have been struggling with addictions to alcohol and other drugs, as well as those who also need care for anxiety, depression, or other co-occurring mental health concerns.

Alcohol Rehab

Alcohol use disorder (alcoholism) is the most common form of addiction in the United States. In 2020, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) reported that that about 28.9 million people ages 12 and above (or 10.2% of people in that age range) are addicted to alcohol.

In addition to helping patients quit drinking, our alcohol rehab also prepares them to maintain a healthy sober lifestyle in a nation where alcohol is easily accessible and its use is prevalent in both public and private social events.

Drug Rehab

According to the 2023 version of the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NS-DUH), about 46.2 million adults ages 18 and above had a substance use disorder, which is the clinical term for addiction. The most common types of addiction involved marijuana, cocaine, and prescription drugs.

Drug rehab at our treatment center in Jacksonville helps patients address issues that may have contributed to their substance use in the first place, identify triggers that could threaten their continued recovery, and build a foundation for lifelong abstinence from addictive substances.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Dual diagnosis is the clinical term for having both an addition and a mental health disorder. Though the term dual diagnosis may not be familiar to many people, the experience it describes occurs quite frequently.

A September 2022 study in the journal Psychiatry Research reported that more than one-third of adults in the U.S. who struggle with addiction also have a co-occurring mental health concern.

When a person has dual diagnosis, it is essential to address both conditions during treatment. Attempting to treat an addiction while ignoring the patient’s mental health needs can undermine their ability to heal and increase their risk of relapse.

Evidence-Based Treatment Approaches

Personalized addiction treatment at our center in Jacksonville may include a variety of evidence-based components, such as:

Please note that every patient’s customized plan may not include all services listed above. Treatment can vary depending in each person’s symptoms as well as which program they are enrolled in.

Our Continuum of Care Philosophy

Our continuum of care philosophy is based on our understanding that different people need different types of care to help them end their substance use and advance in their recovery.

We work closely with each patient to assess how they have been affected by addiction and identify their short- and long-term goals, so that we can be sure we’re providing the focused services that best align with their unique needs and expectations.

For example, patients who have completed inpatient treatment, or who have not previously received addiction treatment in Jacksonville or elsewhere, often benefit from the full days of structured care that we offer at the PHP level.

Individuals who have established a foothold in early recovery, but who need additional support as they prepare to fully reintegrate into their workplace and community, are often ideal candidates for our IOP.

As patients prepare to transition out of our care, we also provide them with information about outpatient counseling, peer-led groups, and other resources that can offer continued support in the months and years to come.

Family Support and Education

The impact of addiction is rarely limited to the person who develops the disease. Their family members, close friends, and romantic partners are also likely to be affected. During and after a person’s time in treatment, their loved ones can also play a vital role in helping them end their substance use and maintain their recovery.

At Design Recovery, we work with the loved ones of our patients to connect them with the resources and support services they need to process their experiences, begin to heal from the damage they have incurred, and learn how to better support each other moving forward.
